On October 21, 2026, Consul General Fu Fengshan published a byline article titled “China’s development is an opportunity for Canada and the world” in the Times Colonist. The full text of the article is as follows:

October 1 this year marks the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Over the past years, the Chinese Government has led the Chinese people in achieving two miracles: rapid economic growth and enduring social stability.

This year, amidst a turbulent world, China has delivered an outstanding performance, with its 1.4 billion people enjoying an unprecedented sense of fulfillment, happiness, and security. In the first half of this year, China’s GDP grew by 4.7% year on year. Attributed to expanding domestic demand, deepening reform and upgrading industries, China’s growth drivers are shifting from traditional factor inputs, exports and investment toward innovation-driven growth, upgraded consumption and industrial optimization.

The success China has achieved has not only profoundly transformed the nation but also made significant contributions to global peace and development. Over the past decade and more, China’s contribution to global economic growth has remained at around 30 percent, which makes China an important contributor to wold economy. China’s steady development continues to generate new opportunities for the world, including Canada.

No matter how the world may change, our commitment to peaceful development will not change. We will forge ahead despite challenges, pursue innovation and high-quality growth, and resolutely implement the four global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping, all while continuing to share “China Opportunities 2.0” with the rest of the world.

This year also marks the 56th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Canada. Over the past 56 years, China-Canada relations have generally moved forward positively. In particular, under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Carney, the relationship has entered a new era of building a new type of strategic partnership. This has guided both sides to vigorously boost exchanges at all levels and across all fields, deepen mutual trust, and deliver tangible cooperation outcomes.

Right now, the friendly atmosphere between our two countries is steadily consolidating, the desire for dialogue and exchange is growing ever stronger, and the future of mutually beneficial cooperation is increasingly bright.Recent polling, including Pew research shows a significant improvement in Canadians’ views on China, while far fewer Canadians see China as a threat. A recent Harris Poll survey delivers positive data: 80% of Canadians believe expanding trade with China benefits consumers; 42% see China as a more reliable partner.

China-Canada cooperation has yielded fruitful results and holds broad prospects. According to Chinese statistics, in the first eight months of this year, bilateral trade volume grew by 17.1 percent year-on-year, with China’s imports from Canada increasing by 24.8 percent. China’s expanding market demand matches Canada’s strengths in energy, minerals, agriculture, forestry, technology, finance and professional services. As Canada advances economic diversification, both countries can leverage complementary advantages to deepen cooperation and create shared benefits.

British Columbia and China are natural partners. BC boasts unique advantages as Canada’s Asia-Pacific gateway. Its strengths in energy, minerals, forestry, agriculture, fisheries, green development and modern services perfectly fit Chinese market demand. Looking ahead, there are significant potentials, and growing opportunities for both sides. Our cooperation should be enhanced not only in tangible areas such as energy and commodities, but also in intangible areas such as digital technology, AI, culture, education, tourism, and youth exchanges.

Canada needs friends, and China is a friend. We look forward to closer, more productive and sustainable bilateral exchanges at all levels. We should work together to effectively implement our leaders’ consensus, to seize the valuable opportunities, step up our efforts, and bring more tangible benefits to our two peoples.
