Honorable Premier Gordon Campbell,

Honorable Minister Ida Chong,

Mr. Patrick Wong, M.L.A,

Mr. Richard T. Lee M.L.A,

Leaders of the Chinese Communities,

All distinguished guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my great pleasure to be here to join you in celebrating the Chinese Heritage Day. This is the second time for me to attend this meaningful celebration. First of all I would like to thank Honorable Minister Ida Chong, Mr. Patrick Wong and Mr. Richard T. Lee for your hospitality and elaborate preparation. Secondly I wish to take this opportunity to express my gratefulness to the Chinese Community and Canadian friends for your continuous efforts over the years in promoting the friendship and cooperation between the Province of British Columbia and China.

As you may know it, seeking and maintaining harmony in family and the society is the key spirit of the Chinese cultural heritage. The foundation of this harmony is mutual understanding and respect for each other. Only on this basis can people bring their wisdom, creativity and initiative into full play in the process of promoting the general welfare of the society and making a brighter future. This harmony is also in accordance with the spirit of a multicultural society of Canada. For years the Chinese Community in B.C. has committed itself to carrying on the Chinese heritage and to building a multicultural society. Their persistent efforts have already been recognized by the society. Therefore, I believe, the Chinese Heritage Day is not only a celebration for the precious Chinese culture and tradition, but also a good opportunity to find out the great contributions the Chinese Community has made for years to B.C.

Ladies and Gentlemen, China and Canada have enjoyed a close economic and cultural relationship for a long time. Our two countries have cooperation in a wide range of sectors. However the space to expand this cooperation is still so large. As you know, China currently retains a position as one of the world's most dynamic market and a key growth point in world economy. This indicates opportunities. So, I sincerely hope the Chinese Heritage Day celebration could not only play an important role in helping our two peoples to obtain a better understanding for each other's culture but also serve as a bridge for a wider and deeper cooperation between our two countries.

Thank you.
