Statement by Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kongquan on the Bombing of the UN office in Iraq

The UN Office in Iraq was hit by a car bomb on the afternoon of 19 August, resulting in heavy casualties. We are shocked at the event. The Chinese Government condemns this violent attack against the UN personnel. We would like to express our condolences to the dead and sympathy to the injured.

The Chinese side supports the efforts made by the UN towards the reconstruction in Iraq. We strongly urge the relevant authorities to take measures to safeguard effectively the personal security of the UN personnel in Iraq.
